캐나다에서 온 감사의 편지

 

1987년 12월 31일 저녁 7시에 출발하여 제주항에 도착한 시간이 1988년 1월 1일 아침 6시, 절친한 벗 '윤철'이와 함께 5박 6일동안 제주도를 여행한 후 거의 20년만에 제주도를 찾았다.

 

 

2006년 10월, 캐나다의 Saskatchewan 주에서 25년전 돼지 80마리로 시작하여 현재 6만마리를 키운다는 (나로서는 도무지 상상이 안가는) 분들과 함께 한 여행이었다.

 

여미지식물원, 민속박물관, 서커스 공연, 중문해수욕장, 해녀들과의 만남, 녹차밭과 전시관, 산굼부리, 성산일출봉, 용두암, 정방폭포, 천지연폭포 등 볼거리가 다양하고 거기다 소주와 흑돼지구이, 갈치조림, 좁살막걸리와 감자전, 라면과 김밥 등  다양한 한국음식을 즐겼다.

 

 

 

아래의 글은 이 분들이 캐나다 귀국 후 보내온 감사의 편지다. 내

게도 잊을 수 없는 나날이었다.

 

 

특히 중문해수욕장에서 즐긴 물놀이의 기억은 아직도 생생하다. 통념상 10월 가을날씨에 해수욕은 아무도 생각치 못하는데 이들은 섬이니까 당연히 수영할 생각이었고 그래서 수영복을 준비했다고 한다. 우리 일행 외에 몇몇이 물놀이를 하고 있었는데 모두 외국인이었다.

 

 

 재미있는 것은 한국어 안내를 맡아주신 개인택시 기사분이 철인3종경기를 하시는 분인데 택시 트렁크에 항상 수영복을 가지고 다녀서 마침 손님들과 함께 해수욕을 즐겼다. 

 10월 중순인데도 다행히 온도가 25도에 달해 물놀이 하기에 좋은 날씨였다. 손님들 왈, "the time of our lives" 이었다고 한다. 참고로 아래의 글에서 'Tommy'는 나의 영어이름이다. 영어학원을 처음 다녔던 1991년도부터 지금까지 사용하고 있다.

On behalf of A** P** and myself, M** F**, I would like to congratulate your agency on excellent service and a truly creative experience on our tour of Jeju Island. From the time our tour guide, Tommy, picked us up at our hotel until our return, we were intrigued by all things new.

The background of Korean history offered by Tommy and local history interpreted through the driver gave us a small amount of insight into the Korean culture and had us thirsting for more. We appreciated the diversity of sights from the circus to the lava caves to the waterfalls. For Ann, perhaps the highlight was the emerald green of the craters and the breathtaking views. For me, the similarity to my homeland of hilly Scotland was incredible. The stone fences outlining the fields, the forested hills and the deer, the ocean air and the mist, talked of home (I immigrated to Canada from Scotland). The tangerine trees, palms and tea plantations belied the similarity but it was enough for me to stay in my mind for always.

Two things made our stay magical. We visited a temple because we asked Tommy if we could, and we hesitatingly asked about swimming and our dream of swimming in the ocean was granted. Tommy communicated so well with the driver and vice-versa that we had the time of our lives! Ann and I would like to add our thanks for giving us such an efficient, happy and knowledgeable guide like Tommy who made all things possible!!
